Lake Chaubunagungamaug, usually known as “Lake Webster” is a lake in the town of Webster, Massachusetts, United States. Coordinates of the location of the lake is 42 ° 02′30 “N 71° 50′30″ W. The lake is bordered by the state of Connecticut. Lake surface area of 5.83 km².
Its full name is written as Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg Lake, 45 characters totally. The name of this lake is the longest place name in the United States, and one of the longest place name in the world. Today, most people are more often referred the lake as “Lake Webster”, but there are also people who like to show skill (including some local residents) in saying the long name in fast speech.
The lake is often called by various names, but Lake Chaubunagungamaug is officially recognized name of the government of the United States. However, local residents and also the official site of Webster’s more like using a long name.
This lake’s name comes from the local language of Nipmuck tribe which means “fishing place at the border”. This lake is a major fishing locations in the border area where a few indigenous tribes, and the location of the meeting of the path into the tribal transportation facilities around the lake. Based on these reasons, these lake is also often used as a meeting place.
